A loving ode to film history which I described in September as "visually beautiful, deeply engaging, and irresistably charming," it ends on a high reminiscent of Slumdog Millionaire (2008), and has managed to win over even the most reluctant of moviegoers while playing virtually every stop on the festival circuit since Cannes (where Dujardin was named best actor), picking up audience awards all along the way (including the Hamptons, San Sebastian, St. Louis, Chicago, and Austin film fests'). Ironically, it captures the current zeitgeist even more than most films set in the present by showing how technological advances coupled with an economic downturn can upend anyone, but that -- with drive, determination, and a little help from one’s friends (and animals) -- a comeback is always possible.
